First Baptist Norfolk is one church with two locations, one in Norfolk and the other in Chesapeake on Volvo Parkway. We strive to bring glory to God and desire to be known as a church that is serving Hampton Roads to change the world. Each year, we look for opportunities for our church family to band together to serve the community around us. This year, we are excited to be serving the wonderful people of South Norfolk.
Over the course of the month of September, we will be helping with repairs and maintenance of twelve homes, working in the Community Garden, collecting school supplies for five South Norfolk schools, and hosting a big community party on September 30. If you live in South Norfolk, you may see our volunteers in navy blue shirts on your street over the course of the month. Feel free to say hello and hear about why we have chosen to spend September with you.
If you are a South Norfolk resident and want to learn more about the Big Serve project, contact Lauren at email@example.com. We have really enjoyed getting to know your community over the course of this journey and we love your neighborhood!
We are a church that is serving Hampton Roads to change the world. We know that when we are faithful to love people God is glorified and we often have the chance to share the reason for our service with others.
For this reason, we organize Big Serve as an opportunity to serve together. This year, our entire church – both locations – will be working together on one project! We have partnered with the area of South Norfolk to assist homeowners and the community in several areas and we want you to get plugged in to this amazing opportunity.
We have teams organized by type of service that will meet during the month of September at a variety of times so we can best fit into your schedule. You can sign up even after Big Serve has begun on Sept. 4! Below is a description and general schedule of these teams. Please fill out the Big Serve Volunteer Form here to get signed up to help us as we serve our community.
This team will be responsible for minor repairs to home exteriors like replacing porch boards and repairing fences. If you are an accomplished handyman or have a history in building or contracting, we would love to have you on this team! The repair team is meeting Mondays-Thursdays from 4-7 pm and Saturdays from 10am-2pm.
This team will be responsible for painting exterior structures like porches and fences. The Paint team is meeting Mondays 4-7pm, Thursdays 1-5pm, and Saturdays 10am-2pm.
This team will be helping some homeowners with minor yard maintenance and will work in South Norfolk’s community garden. The Landscape team will be meeting on Saturdays from 10am-2pm.
Like the One Mile Mission assignments we have done at Kempsville and Volvo, this team will be visiting with the people of South Norfolk to share what we are doing in the community and invite people to the celebration block party at the end of the month. One Mile Mission can be done on your own time, although we ask that people grab a buddy to do their visits with.
This team will be planning and executing the celebratory block party taking place in the afternoon on Sunday, Sept. 30.
Many of our senior adult classes are collecting school supplies for South Norfolk schools, but donations from anyone are welcomed! You can find the list of supplies here. School supplies can be dropped off in the lobbies of both the Kempsville and Volvo locations on Sundays or can be left at the front desk of the Kempsville location.
Please contact Lauren Bassett, firstname.lastname@example.org, if you have any questions!
