Senior Adult Summer Camp

Aug. 5-7

Monday-Wednesday, 8:15 am-1:30 pm (Lunch served at 12:30 pm). All Senior Adults are welcome to come and enjoy a great Bible study, music, breakout sessions, food, fun, and fellowship! Registration begins in June. Cost: $20. There will also be some paid classes you can register for. For event details or registration information, contact or 461-3226, ext. 281.

Our senior adult camp will focus on seven passages of Scripture where Jesus said, “Follow Me.” Here is a little explanation. Twenty times in the Gospels, Jesus invites people on a life-changing journey with two words, “Follow me.” By cross referencing these in each Gospel, one discovers seven powerful admonitions, Jesus’ Top Seven, of what we are to do and be as disciples. These seven key passages provide a clear composite of what a true disciple looks like, according to Jesus. This study will encourage you to make the necessary life changes and adjustments, based on these seven passages, in order to experience the exciting daily journey of following Jesus, up-close and personal.

Guest Speaker: Dr. Mike James

Dr. Mike James currently serves as interim education pastor at Porter Memorial Baptist Church in Lexington, Ky., and also serves as an ambassador for the Central Kentucky Network of Baptists. James was on staff at First Baptist Norfolk from 1989-1996. Over the years, he has served churches in Tennessee and Kentucky in many roles, including leading conferences, consulting, and developing outreach and discipleship strategies.

His passion is to see people come to Christ and then grow in their faith as a disciple. James has co-authored two books: “The V.E.L.C.R.O. Church” with Dr. Ken Hemphill and “The Little Book of Small Groups” with Joseph Bratcher.

James and his wife, Kathy, have been married for 45 years and have one son and two grandchildren. He graduated from Eastern Kentucky University and Southern Seminary, and holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from Regent University.

Young at Heart Meeting, July 2

Our Young at Heart Meeting takes place on July 2, 10 am, in the Fellowship Hall at our Kempsville Road Location. Program: Award-winning public speaker Anna Deitel will portray Dolley Madison. A graduate of Clarion University, Anna Deitel is a public speaker whose experience stretches from both the stage to the classroom. Her previous theatrical credits include "Footloose," "The Taming of the Shrew," and "Guys and Dolls." This past summer, she debuted Eliza Hamilton in Dawn at Weehawken, as well as her own show "Stronger then sorrow." She lives in Johnson City, Tennessee with her family where she is blessed to take on her greatest role as wife and mother. The story of our nation's fourth first lady, like the one of America, is one of hope and struggle. I invite you to step in the past with Dolley Madison as she talks about the tragedies she had to overcome on her way to becoming a "national institution" trendsetter and a mother to our nation. As she famously rescued the White House portrait of George Washington on the eve of the burning of Washington by the British in 1814, Dolley displayed a spirit that could never be burnt down.

The Young at Heart Senior Council Meeting will follow in the Parlor at 12:45 pm. For event details or registration information, contact or 461-3226, ext. 281.
